CHAPTER SEVEN
A Beauty for the Beast
Fergus filed down his tusks and horns, wondering if Isolte truly would kiss him. He clipped the claw-like nails at the tips of his fingers and ground them down until they were smooth and almost human-looking, save for their black color. As soon as she saw all he had done for her, she ran to him with open arms, hugging him and standing on tiptoe trying to kiss his cheek. He stooped a little lower so she could reach him, pleased at the way she stirred passion in his heart like no other. A moment later, his desire soured into his usual shame. Even without claws or horns, it didnât cure him of having a snout, shrink his size or make the throbbing manhood between his legs appear less daunting. Cutting off his tusks didnât make him any less of a beast.
âYou really have no obligation to do that,â he said, straightening. âI told you before I donât expect you to fulfill the duties of a wife.â
She snuggled her face against his chest. âNay, youâre wrong; I must kiss you. I know now more than ever I could never have loved Domongart like this. I canât imagine loving any other man so deeply.â
His heart filled with melancholy as he held her to him. Perhaps she did love him. She seemed earnest. Yet how could he expect her to be content in this life? What kind of life would she live, married to a monster? He would never be able to give her what a human man could, a family among other things. He should have listened to his father. Aonghus had warned him how selfish his plan had been.
Isolte stood on her tip toes again, trying to kiss him. He didnât stop for her this time.
He wrapped his arms around her and stroked her hair. âI know Iâm horrible to look upon. It would be much easier for you if I was handsome like Domongart. It would be easier if I were human. It isnât too late for me to. . . .Mayhap I should leave . . . go back to the forest so you can, ahem, marry someone else or. . . .â
Isolte pulled away, a scowl darkening her delicate features. âDo you not listen to anything I say? I just told you I love you and you talk about abandoning me.â She stomped away, leaving him stunned and stammering.
Isolte returned a moment later, a chair in her hands. She dropped it down in front of him, climbed up, and stared into his eyes. âCease acting sorry for yourself. I see no monster when I look at you. I see a manâthe man who loves me.â She took his face in her hands and pressed her lips to his. It was at that moment, he knew she loved him as much as he loved her. And in the following moments when she continued to kiss him, it crushed any remaining doubts.
Her fingers stroked the blades of grass on his shoulders, smoothing over the wrinkled lines of his leathery snout.
